Months Later, Looking Back

It has now been over 6 months since I sold my truck so I figured that I would take a little trip down memory lane. I plan to leave this website up as it is intended as something that others who have similar problems can reference.

I have been driving a 1990 Toyota Corolla since selling my Silverado. The Corolla get great mileage, costs very little to maintain and has about 1/2 of the insurance cost when compared to my Silverado. The thing is I miss the truck. I find myself looking at Silver Short Bed Standard Cab Silverados with a lustful eye, but the memories of my transmission issues come screaming back.

Chevrolet has built a truck that inspires my imagination, but fails to provide the sort of low maintenance, reliable, affordable transportation that I need as a young working guy.

Build a truck, like a rock, no gimmicks and I will become a customer once more. Fail to do so and I will never buy another new GM product.

Truck is working, but I'm Done

The truck is not working as it should, but I am done. I am selling it and hopefully moving into something from the 67-74 era. I want something that is easier for me to maintain and does not have any modern computer controls on the transmission or engine.

5,000 miles later

I have been quite busy with work and school so I have not made it back to the dealership yet, but I have only driven about 5k miles since the last overhaul and the transmission is acting up again. It heats up excessivly in traffic, begin to shift hard after driving more then 10 or so miles in traffic, and want to shift into overdrive early and bog down the engine excessivly.

I will update when I get a chance to take the truck back to the dealership in the next couple of weeks.

More Information

Now that I have cooled down a bit I realize that I have not given that much information on my truck.

2000 Silverado LS
4.8L V8 engine
Towing package (3.73 gears, trans cooler, oil cooler)
Limited Slip Differential
Short Bed, Regular Cab.

I had the transmission replaced at around 40k miles by the dealership.
The truck was not longer under warranty so I had to eat that bill.
At around 25k miles later the transmission is slipping and creating excessive heat.
I have taken the truck back to the dealer as the transmission is still under warranty and they currently have had the truck for about a week.

My concern is that the warranty on the new transmission will run out and I have no reason to believe that it will not simply fail on me again. I believe that this is a problem that many others have experienced and I have created this site so that we can all get together and see how widespread this problem really is.

It is my understanding that the HD trucks and 2500-3500 run a different transmission setup, but I am not sure.

Taking a minute to comment about your experiance will only help others in the same situation. If we work together we will have more bargaining power with GM to get the problem resolved.

All comments are welcom.

Important to Post Comments

After spending a little time on several chat boards it seem that some of the problems that I am having are not isolated incidents. It is important that if you have had similar issues that you leave a comment. This will allow us to form a database that will give us some idea of how wide spread these problems are. Please take the time to post a comment detailing your experiences.

The Saga of My Truck

Early in 2000 I took money that had taken me years of hard work and saving to the GM dealership and purchased the truck of my dreams. A 2000 Silverado with a 4.8L V8 engine. I believed that I was getting on of “the most dependable, longest-lasting trucks on the road.” I don’t know if it is possible for a single statement to have been more wrong. Now in October of 2004 with just a little over 70,000 miles on the odometer, I am having major transmission problems fixed by the dealer. It is important to note that I had the transmission replaced at a cost of over $3000 dollars just over 20,000 miles back. SO NOW WITH JUST OVER 70K MILES I AM ON MY THIRD TRANSMISSION! I AM STILL ON MY FIRST SET OF BRAKE PADS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE. This whole situation has me so upset that I am taking action. I am creating this page to find out how many others out there are having this sort of problem. If this problem is impacting more then just me we need to get together and make CHEVY FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THESE TRUCKS. Please take the time to post a comment detailing your problems as well as send me an e-mail with your name, make, model, year, problems, and some sort of contact information (phone number) so I can start putting together a database.
