The Saga of My Truck

Early in 2000 I took money that had taken me years of hard work and saving to the GM dealership and purchased the truck of my dreams. A 2000 Silverado with a 4.8L V8 engine. I believed that I was getting on of “the most dependable, longest-lasting trucks on the road.” I don’t know if it is possible for a single statement to have been more wrong. Now in October of 2004 with just a little over 70,000 miles on the odometer, I am having major transmission problems fixed by the dealer. It is important to note that I had the transmission replaced at a cost of over $3000 dollars just over 20,000 miles back. SO NOW WITH JUST OVER 70K MILES I AM ON MY THIRD TRANSMISSION! I AM STILL ON MY FIRST SET OF BRAKE PADS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE. This whole situation has me so upset that I am taking action. I am creating this page to find out how many others out there are having this sort of problem. If this problem is impacting more then just me we need to get together and make CHEVY FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THESE TRUCKS. Please take the time to post a comment detailing your problems as well as send me an e-mail with your name, make, model, year, problems, and some sort of contact information (phone number) so I can start putting together a database.

01, 2500hd, 8.1, allison. Engine burns 3 quarts of oil between changes, Transmission slips, numerous times in for electrical problems, Clunking in steering somewhere, and to top it off I mysteriously got the whole fuel system loaded with dirt. Needed injectors, fuel rail, pump and tank cleaned. I had to wait over a week because gm couldn't find parts, meanwhile renting a truck during that period.
GM does not have customer service, once you buy its yours and yours alone
If I could get out of this truck without losing my butt I would and there will never be another gm in my company

I have an 04 Crew cab that has acted like a manual transmission when you brake to a stop without using a clutch. I would watch the tach and it would pull the engine down until it died. It's done that 4 times and because it hasn't set a code, I get "Cannot Duplicate" on the warranty work.
Once while approaching a stop light after slowing down the light turned green and upon acceleration it acted like it had a 2500 stall then, BANG... into gear.
The truck has 6500 miles and it started around 2000 miles.
Other than those instances, I have no complaints. It's really a pretty nice truck and if I get half the reliability that I've gotten out of my 90, I'll be very pleased.

At least the engine isn't knocking like the 02 Trailblazer and the 99 Jimmy that we had prior to this truck(KNOCK ON WOOD).

I have a 2000 silverado 4x4 long box reg cab, open rear end, 3.73 gears (wish I had 4.10's though). It has the 5.3, and auto as well. I ordered it with the manual 4x4 shift lever. I've towed a 6500 lbs enclosed car hauler no problems. I use 3rd gear not OD, and tow haul mode. No problems so far. I have 80,000 miles on mine, and still have piston slap noise on cold mornings. Oh and I broke the tail gate straps. Other than that no problems yet.

I worked in a tranny shop for a little while when I was first getting into being a mechanic. I saw first hand how well the gm tranny's were built. This was when the 700r4 overdrive first came out. It became the main part of our business. By that I mean about 90% of the business. The owner of the shop tried to convince most everyone to go with the 350th trans instead as he couldn't offer any kind of warranty on the overdrive. It was simply not designed correctly. The people like my father who refused to go with any other tranny than what was in it originally, paid the mortal price. He would eventually end up replacing the tranny 3 times before finally selling the truck. This was not the first time it happened to him either. He bought a 1/2 ton fullsize in 1988 brand new which also suffered the same problem, but he sold that truck after the first time the tranny went out. He is a man who works for GM and takes pride in his work, but a faulty design is just that, a faulty design. After working on cars for a while now I have realized that all cars have their faults, and that no brand is better than any others, but when every time a 1/2 ton truck has the same problem before they even hit 50,000 miles, they should be fixed. It proves that there is a faulty design. Things only get recalled if their is some kind of physical harm to the people driving the vehicle and that is not right. It should also be recalled if they all suffer from the same problem, whether its the trans going out, or the oil pan rusting out from the inside like ford had a problem with. People spend tons of money on a vehicle and they deserve some respect from the company who manufactures these vehicle's, but respect is something that seems to be an impossible dream in this day. I am a small business owner and I will walk to the end of the earth for the people who buy products from me, but I am small business. Big business takes the money and runs, as far and fast as they can. I guess that's why I am small and will always be.
