Ford Powered Camaro

In keeping with the hybrid motif of my last post here is a horse of a different color. A Chevrolet Camaro, seen by many as the ideal expression of a ponycar, wearing a blue oval on its valve covers.

A bit of imformation about the engine from the owner’s website:

Ford Motorsport R302 Block, 2.83″ Sonny Bryant Billet Racing Crank, Carrillo Rods, JE Dished Pistons, Canton Dry Sump Oil Pan, Raceline 3 stage oil pump, CompCams Timing Gear & Chain, CompCams 35-306-8 Blower/Computer Cam (284/290-.533/.544-LC114), AFR185 Heads, 1.72 Roller Rockers, CompCams Solid Roller Lifters, Ported Lower GT40 Intake with Custom Upper Intake, Twin 55mm throttle bodies, Vortech Fuel rails, Holley 50# Injectors, Accel DFI GenVII Fuel Injection System.

(Yes, FORD!) I already had it! Was going into a ‘93 Mustang. Sold it for this ‘68 Camaro. Engine is worth to much to let it go. This ought to get the shit stirring. There is a benefit! I can move it back farther for better weight distribution. :)

Here is a link to the builder’s website: Ron’s 68 Camaro RS/x

Thats horrible, a Ford engine in a camaro… dear god. I guess its payback, since I tell every Ford guy at the parts place I work at that I hate fords, and the only way id drive one is to put a chevy engine in it lol. Mmm a cougar with a chevy engine, now thats hot…

  2. The Roaring Eagle Says:

it’s cool but not really since i love Camaros and really don’t care much for Ford… but it’s cool

  3. Merc63 Says:

The best part about thyis car is how it’s make the narrwominded brand loyalists puke. Guys, they are cars. Mechanical devices, not religious idols. If a car like this makes you heave, you’re not an automotive enthusiast, your an idiot.

Long live ingenuity and hot rodding passion for the unique!

  4. tom Says:

i think it looks badass… i see all these fords with chevy motors and they all look like ass… BUY FORD!!!

  5. Boomer Says:

Way to go!! What a payback to all the Chevy jerks that put a pansy a$$ bowtie in a classic Ford body! Finally, a Camaro that can hold it’s own against a Ford!!!

    Flame on bowtie boys… ;)

  6. PJM99 Says:

Looks badass. I like all cars. Not really a brand loyalist at all. I would have gone with a Chevy motor myself in that thing but who cares, it’s not mine. Great work.

  7. willum Says:

“i think it looks badass… i see all these fords with chevy motors and they all look like ass… BUY FORD!!!”

Duh, that would be because it looks like a FORD… hence this one looks beautiful because it’s a CHEVY… poor camaro…

  8. Reugoff Says:

I think it looks great, I have always loved the classic camaros. But I am a Ford guy at heart. This is definately the way to have the best of both. Nice Job

  9. billybob Says:

that is hideous.I am a ford guy but a 1st gen camaro is a beautiful car…..glad you wasted one…idiot

  10. TOM WELCH Says:

Way to go! I am considering a 455 buick for my 67 Firebird. The best part is brutal torque in a package as light as a small block chevy. I lke the idea of a Ford engine in a Camaro. I know of many swaps of a similar nature and each one is unique. which is more that anyone can say for a chevy powered whatever. Chevys are great, just too common.

  11. RX7 T-78 Says:

    FREAKEN A MAN..THAT’S BAD ASS!

  12. trey Says:

Very clean car. Dont listen to the mullet sporting rednecks. Good work being original.

1st gen camaros are all the same, see one you’ve seen them all. Good work being different.

  13. Colin Says:

Nice car…BEAUTIFUL! You do nice work and you are a smart man! My next project is a 60-64 Impala with a turbo 5.4 mod Ford!

  14. matt Says:

Wow thats a nice car.. too bad you put a Ford engine in it because it’s trash now you might as well just push the car off a cliff because it has ford AIDS now… Ford sucks

  15. underpowered Says:

Why?, why ruin a classic car by putting a junk 302 in it? it is just un-american to do that sort of thing. There is a reason why a bunch of ford guys put chevy motors in their cars, because they are Better! you did this for no reason and ruined a great car.

  16. sko_ford Says:

a kid i went to tech school with wanted to a flathead in a 55 chevy or a late model camero as pay back.

  17. Cobra04 Says:

I have mixed feelings on this one….I own a Cobra because Its faster than ALOT LS1’s stock…and they are GREAT engines…Im a Chevy at heart but gotta give it to Ford for their engines……..anywho..This is great..Im feeling it…I rather see this than a Nissan engine or a V-tec under the hood….keep it American and I have no worries…..Its funny how alot of you guys are Ford vs Chevy and Chevy vs. Ford yet Imports are just looking at us and laughing while their friends with eachother…Imports dont hate Imports yet for some reason American cars can’t stand each other…Sad…very sad and Ignorant…

  18. Car Guy Says:

That is really NICE!! Its about time were seeing chevys with fords in them. All these other guys who are upset are inbreads anyway an have a brain washed ego problem. Its o.k. for them to see Cobras, Mustangs, an ’20s to ’50s Fords with chevys in them, but how dare someone do a Camero with a Ford motor. You just turned their worlds upside down, they are all huddling in the corner with their thumbs in their mouth scared an crying!!! Dont know whats up or down, black from white or left from right, an screaming “MOMMY”!!! ……Good going on your project! Looks good!!!

  19. Its all good Says:

Everyone has the right to there opinions. Some stronger than others. This is what makes amarica the best place in the world along with the muscle cars that Detroit blessed us with. I love all american muscle (I’ll admit Foreign too) Ford motors are far from crap. All motors have their issues in some way or another. Any motor properly set-up can produce serious power with outstanding reliability. This Twin Turbo 5.0 motor generates 700hp at 10psi of boost pulling to 7Krpm all day long. Good luck keeping up with it. Add more boost and a 100hp shot of NOS and watch out. But now your getting into power thats just crazy. And yes, a small block Chevy motor can do the same. Come to mention I haven’t seen any twin turbo Mopars yet?

  20. Its all good Says:

Oh yea, The some of you probably don’t want to here that it has a Ford T56 trans, Ford 9″ rearend and a Griggs Racing Ford 5 link….

  21. fnearing Says:

beautiful car!!! I come from the diesel world where all the engines (all the good ones at least!) are built by a different manufacturer than the vehicle they’re installed in. I am not brand loyal. I use what works and what works well. I’ve built a number of SBF’s, but I’m not a Ford guy… a number of my buddies have LS1’s in Ford bodies. I’ve always said I’m not loyal to anything but logic. If you’ve got a good powerplant and a good car to put it in, who cares who originally built them? are they paying your bills?!?! The original “hot rods” were old Fords w/ Caddy, Chrysler, and Lincoln engines in them… Ever hear of a guy named Carroll Shelby? he took a little Brittish roadster and repowered it with American iron! I’m sure the britts whined and moaned the way some of you guys are! He also contacted Chevy first about the project, but they turned him down, so he went to Ford. I’m sure if they turned him down, he would have gone to Chrysler. Brand loyalists make me chuckle. I can understand if the brand is signing your checks and putting food on your table, otherwise it’s just silly!

  22. Clayton Says:

Bout time. Tired of all the old Fords with Chevy engines, glad to see a Chevy with a Ford engine.

  23. chris wise Says:

Beautiful intake, well matched engine, beautiful body, not crazy about the side pipes. All in all, a fine combination.

  24. Stacy Says:

Nice!!!! I love it! Very unique….. Wise choice my friend!!!! :)
    ‘Great look!’

  25. yyz28 Says:

Nice car. It’s quite well done, and looks great. I don’t really mind the ford/chevy melding. Use what you’ve got to build what you want!

…I do have to laugh a bit though… as my friend pointed out “In typical ford fashion it has to have a blower to make any power”…

  26. ViperKiller Says:

That is a sweet ride! Cars are cars -Who cares what powerplant it has, I’d drive the hell out of that car! Now if it had a Honda motor I might have had something else to say about it.

  27. Jason Says:

I wouldn’t have done it, but it is a sweet looking ride. Just keep the hood closed and no one will know the difference when you spank em.

  28. Dave Says:

Funny stuff. Looks like outstanding craftsmanship. I don’t understand the engine choice at all, but to each his own. Was the owner just confused when he saw that a camaro came with a 302?

  29. I Bleed Ford Blue Says:

I LIKE THIS CAR. Trust me, when you’re building a car of this caliber, there is NO confusion about engine choice. Keep in mind, this car can blow off the new Z06, the Ford GT, and lots of expensive Porsches and Ferraris. To all you Ford haters out there, respect the 302! The potential of those engines easily equals or exceeds that of your precious 350s, with 48 less cubic inches! This example is overbored and destroked, so I’m thinking the exhaust note at those high rpm’s would make anybody’s knees wobbly. The craftsmanship is superb, I am just not sure about the side pipes though. Leave those for the measly 300-400Hp crowd. ;)

  30. Polt Says:

^ You must not know the value of that motor..

I like the creativity..I’d be interested in know more about the throttle cable & MAF/Speed Density setup..Sweet setup.

Either which way.. thats one bad mofo.

  31. Dave Says:

Hey man, to each his own. i personally am building a ‘90 Mustang notch and i’m using a twin turbo 427 sbc with a Dart block, Dart 18* heads, Accel Gen7 EFI, TH400, Neal Chance, etc. etc. etc. i’m on TurboMustangs.com, Corral.net, and LS1Tech. i get slack from some, yet others like it a lot, reguardless of the site. stop by some time and blow the minds of some of these guys. LOL…it’s Fun!!!

  32. Boz Says:

Bravo. The only bad thing about Chevy’s is their junk motors and you’ve overcome that by putting the BEST american motor in it! Funny how small block Ford motors dominate in EVERY aspect of racing. SBF always better than BBC. Nice suspension too, only the best - Griggs. I dig the Watts link. Little boys wear bowties!

  33. PnyPwr Says:

nice job! I have been thinking about this exact type swap for a few years now - this one is superb! (I wanted a 460, painted chvy orange, in an early camarrow. bbig block emblems you know….)

kudos an a job well done - if it runs and you like it enjoy!

  34. kirby Says:

I like it. Great conversation piece for the “ford vs. chevy” type people. Maybe you should have put an AMC engine in it… that way everyone would have been arguing.

  35. Lobelifter Says:

    This is fun…

The only true reason there aren’t more brand swaps using Fords or Chryslers is because of the wallet size! Chevy’s are just cheaper not better. Anyone can purchase the same parts from the same aftermarket dealer. This (de-stroked) 302 is only in a Ford image. I don’t think anyone made a production passenger engine with over 700 HP! I do like the Boss stripe… “The Instigator!”
As far as innovation, Smokey Yunick would have been proud.

I don’t think it would be possible for a Chevy lover to slide behind the wheel, mat the pedal, hear the high pitch whine, dump the clutch and not burst into uncontrollable histeria… If it pins me in the seat, I’m all over it. I’m sure this car is what that’s all about! And can you say; “drifting anyone?”

    Can I drive?

  36. Coool-Leo Says:

What the hell were you thinking! What an abortion!!!!!!!!!! You must be a pole smoker! Must be built for dragging in west hollywood.

  37. cwalk Says:

Colin colin colin colin. a 5.4 in a beautiful imp. even in the gt it barely makes 550 and thats for around 150000. you gotta be shittin me the vette z06 ls7 hangs with the gt in every test and cost less than half the price and chevy sells the engine for around 13-14 grand.505 underated horses ALL MOTOR. the 5.4 is absolute shit, the gt is shit the f150 lightning is shit. you know it I know it.

  38. cwalk Says:

I dont want to sound like a ford basher (even though I am) putting a ford motor in a 1st gen cam is payback for every classic ford pickup being rebuilt with the 350 (it really is the most economical choice). but i dont like it. a ford should be built with ford muscle and chevy with chevy. but some people settle and some people take the easy way out and thats too bad. I dont really like fords and would probaly never buy one besides the 67 gt500 or the daytona coupe (outta my league) but I drive mustangs, 2 of my friends have 04 machs, 1 is on his 2nd mach (wreck), dont worry he’ll never hear the end of it. and his first one ran a 12.7 in the quarter with just slp longtubes so they’re not slow they just arent for me theyre too short (wheelbase) i just think its funny they use all those cams. 4 cams and it only makes 300 horses. thats too much technology and not enough to show for it. Chevy has stuck by the tried and true pushrod and it is still clearly and obviously the best choice. if you search you will find that ford has been seriously talking about bringing back a new pushrod motor. theyre finally catching on

  39. AJ Says:

Good job. It could only have been better with an AMC motor (401), but I’ll settle for Ford!

  40. Baad Ass Barty Says:

HAHAHAHAHAAA ROTFLMAO its about time you bowtie guys got mad,i see chevy in everything too damn much.way to go man,way to get even with the tired ass chivvy in a ford thing

  41. turbo99SS Says:

I’m a Chevy owner, and I honestly can’t see why you guys are getting your shit all up in a knot over this. The 8.2″ deck Ford motor saves you a good amount of weight over a 9″ or taller SBC, and it allows him to push the motor further back without worrying about the distributor running into the firewall, giving him better weight distribution for more performance. I don’t see how anybody can hate on a twin turbo dry sump small block that will make 700+ horsepower easily just because it doesn’t say Chevrolet on the valve covers.

  42. C-rad Says:

Looks like a waste of a perfectly good Ford V8 to me…

  43. Steve Moore Says:

I agree with the majority. I’m tired of seeing the old 350 in Fords. Too common and too cheap to do. Real Raw Torque and Power is only found in Ford engines.
Way to go. Tuck your tails and run little bow-tie boys.

  44. chris Says:

I’ve been thinking of putting my Ford 302 into a 55 chevy. Would you know what mounts to use or would I have to fabricate everything?

  45. diego Says:

wooo, i don´t have words to describe that, but i think that these camaro is the best i¨ve never seen before.

woo, no se que decir, pero creo que este es el mejor camaro que he visto en mi vida, soy fanatico de los mopar, en especial los chevys, a pesar que me carro favorito es el charger, y sigo las actualizaciones desde peru.

  46. Darrin Says:

Hey car looks great and no matter what engine is in it ,its a great car for all the haters out there ,what do you have ?….Likely nothing and a true car enthusiast would never make a comment about power unless it wasnt enough..Cograts on the car and to the haters out there you are a bunch of idiots !

  47. Zack Says:

Why not keep it all GM and put the Chevrolet 302 in it?

  48. Randy Dickerson Says:

well, at least you got it HALF right…….

  49. David Says:

Nothing like using what you have! I like it,but would rather see that setup in a 69 fastback or a Daytona Coupe

  50. Ed Says:

What a waste of a really nice ford engine. Jusk kidding. Nice job about time we started seeing ford products being used that way. Tired of going to car shows and seeing all them ford t-buckets with chevy power. Someone should do a Vette with a 429-460..

  51. Karl Says:

I think the point above about import guys liking each others work is important, ya see, they look past the wee name plate and look at the work itself etc.Never heard all those Chevy guys complaining about the 9″ diff set ups they installed .
I really think the guys who think they started hotrodding should look in the UK,Australia,New Zealand,Sweden etc and open your eyes.Other makes than Chev engines ARE out there, ever heard of making speed parts yourself, you do reliase a cam can be reground for anything? Fancy Hot rod mag thinking the US invented stationwagon hotrods a while back, na, the aussies broke out of the two door mold years before that. You guys want to respect each others cars more before they are taken off us.

  52. JR Nice Says:

I think I would have saved the engine to put in a ‘63 Corvette Split Window.

The SBF has been around a long time and was the choice for some lots of other manufacturers in high performance applications: Shelby used it in his AC’s (Cobra), Chrysler used it in the Sunbeam Tiger, ……DeTomaso Pantera…. TVR Vixens….etc

Almost every Chevy guy I know has cursed the rear mounted distributor.

    Nice job

  53. CobraRGuy Says:

I like it! Like others who have posted here about this car, I don’t hate Chevys, but I do buy and drive Fords. Others here stated that “there’s a reason that people put chevy motors into Fords, because they’re better.” That’s just not the case. The reason that people put 350s into old Fords is because it’s the cheapest and easiest way to do it. There is no other reason. People take the easy cheap way out. Personally, I would rather keep my old Ford all Ford, even if it’s more difficult and ends up costing me more. I’ve owned old chevys, pontiacs, buicks, etc, but I kept them all GM. People who hate Fords are just haters, period. Narrow minded hate filled idiots. Don’t hate cars or the people who drive them. If there were no Fords or Chevys or Dodges, where would the fun rivalry be? For example, without chevys, I wouldn’t have camaros or vettes to beat up on with my 600HP normally aspirated ‘95 Cobra R. Without chevys, I wouldn’t be able to have nearly as much fun! Keep the rivalry alive, but lose the hate.

The only way to sort the body is to replace it with a ‘71 cuda…
and the only way to sort that little donk is to replace it with a blown alloy elephant hemi…

After the wishful thinking you would have to admit it is one fine camaro…
and one fine smallblock… even if it is an unusual marriage…

I just wan’t to know why it isn’t a BOSS 302 Camaro? On the street it probably is!!!

  55. hirolla78 Says:

Sweet car. I was thinking of getting a 1st gen vette and dropping in a toyota supra twin turbo in it. The fast and the furious tokyo drift has a 69 mustang with a nissan skyline rb26dett swap, things sweet. Great job, i’ll race ya once i get my hemi corolla running….. Peace

  56. Geoff Chandler Says:

The Mustang in FF3: Tokyo Drift is a 1967 Mustang, I put picture of it up on the site some time ago RB-26 Mustang

  57. modelawoody Says:

It’s about friggin time, I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for a long time. I’m sick to death of seeing beautiful early Ford bodies with 350 Chevs in them. When I used to bracket race a Mustang, guys would come up to me in the pits and ask, “Why did you build a Ford?” To the guy who commented “the reason they put Chev engines in Ford bodies is because they are better”, all I can say is spoken like a true narrowminded Chevy guy. Awesome craftsmenship by the way. Modelawoody. ( with Ford power )

  58. Cory Says:

Its a badass car but you should of kept it all chevy. its a bad car though man

  59. patrick Says:

that is the best thing that i have seen yet.poeple is all the time put chevy motors in fords .because they are cheaper to build.but this the first thing that is great.i am a big ford fan. and this is some thing i would doo.rock on dude

  60. jessy Says:

    nice, pretty unique…

  61. justin Says:

i agree very tired of all stock or all similar moddified 1st gen camaros , its like how many of the same 65-66 mustangs do you see? its differnet , a welcome change to the norm. i am tired of the chevy vs ford debate, it needs to be american vs ricers/imports, we need to take back the culture that has so formed our lifestyles.
i do also agree FOR THE MOST PART that a ford should be powered by a ford and chevy by a chevy etc. nice work

  62. bill Says:

    Good job it’s about time!

I and my Morpower friends are sick and tired of seeing Chevy motors in are cars.

Not that disk like Chevy’s I own one, it was cheap and I don’t want it to go to junk yard.

So I saved it, I just love old cars, but I really love Fords and Morpowers the most.

  63. Capri owner UK Says:

i dont know what you schmucks are whining about, from what i understand ford windsors have more torque, a little more HP, and are more reliable than the chevy. but; i doesnt matter, id put either in my 1983 ford capri but id never ever ever ever put a japanese engine in it!!

you lot should stop boring each other about putting fords in chevys and vice versa, you should but raggin on at the Rice Vs Muscle debate!! (muscle wins!!)

i got incredibly angry at a colleague today because he suggested i buy a nissan 200zx off him and put the engine in my capri!, i said the idea is ludicrous, and the idea of a japanese engine in my classic ford is frankly nausiating!!

FYI: my capri is a european sister car to the mustang for you yanks!, and ive been planning to put either a 350 chevy or a 351 ford with a 6-speed Borg warner or TH350 in it for a few months now!
i also plan to add a pair of garrett turbos for kicks!!

  64. Capri owner UK Says:

i forgot to mention that the chevy is a fair bit cheaper than the ford but then again you get what you pay for!!

  65. K-rye Says:

wow that camaro is a peice of work although i’ve seen better it is still on my top 5’s this thing is a true bad ass body not so much on the motor kuz well just un american to put a ford and chevy togther.. if it was mine i would have put a nice 540 or 572 in it .. what color is that??

  66. NeonDark Says:

    Bah, I’m a Chevy guy, it’s a bit sacrelig, but that’s okay. You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a 1st-gen with a 302, 327, 350, 383, 396, 427, 454, 502, or a 572. But a Ford engine? One of a kind… sorta. Either way, nice. And I hate to say it, but that’s a nice Ford engine ya got in there, too.

  67. sniper A.K.A. Patrick Says:

Look all you guys that are bitching bout i ford engine in a chevy need to wake the f..k up….you have lost what the pony cars where doing for the times…thay where high h.p. uniqe cars…..i think this is one badass car…i just got a boss 302 givn to me and i have an 88 rs its going into….im not bitching cuz i got a free motor and a free car….whats to bitch bout with that…..chevy and ford both have there high point but with the right tuning i think you could make them the same……….i love chevys but im willing to do something one of a kind cuz thats what make a car a real car

  68. Jay Simons(capridrifter) Says:

I think that it is great….I am an AMC/Ford fan myself But if the job is done right and is unique then I see NO problems with doing this…And that includes European swap and Japanese too…We all love cars and a hot engine is still a hot engine regardless of where it came from,And do any of you guys realize just how much them Asian country’s LOVE the old American muscle? or Europe for that matter?
I may one day just put a Japanese Nissan SR20DET in my old German ford Capri with a Chevy transmission…and an American ford 8.8 rear, and old dodge taillights….why? Just because I may feel like it.
    There I said it

    Great work man Beautiful car!

  70. J.M. Says:

Unltimately, it is your car and you can do whatever you wish with. Personally, I absolutely love it… it’s about time. I know of a guy who put a 427 Ford engine in a 60’s Corvette and kicked some serious ass with it. I personally have a cross breed, a Fiat 124 Spider with a 306 Ford engine in it. The Italian sports car purists don’t like it too much, but I don’t care, all they will see is the tail lights :D

Well done! Always funny to see the Chevy guys get their panties in a bunch over stuff like this, when us Ford guys mostly let the Chevy powered Ford’s go by the wayside. ;) And unless you’re still stuck in the 70’s, I don’t believe the “Chevy is cheaper” argument holds much water these days.

Ok wait a minute here… Why do people think this is weird? The 302 is origionally a chevy motor! It Came stock in the First gen’s…..

All this guy did, was bring the modren 302, into the Camaro’s engin bay.
And discrased it with the oval blue tags, woop-dee-doo.
It’s still Nice, Because It’s A Camaro, and of course, has allot more power then the stock 302 that came in the Camaro, due to modern advances.

Still though… the 302 is a shit motor all round xD
    under powered, and poor durability
after haveing more then two blow… why go back???

the 305 HO is a better motor, but hay, it’s his car.

  74. hotrodv Says:

Wow! That looks amazing! I really like the dual throttle body intake. Who cares about what engine is in what car as long as it makes power. And on top of this you guys should just appreciate the time and engineering it took to pull this off. My hats off to you brother!

  75. ragtop64 Says:

    Great camaro, great motor.
    I love both…

  77. Dave Says:

A BETTER IDEA! No oil dripping, gas sucking heartbreak
under the hood. Chevys are simply CHEAP! You get what you
    pay for.

We have a ‘71 Chevy pickup with a 460 Ford in it. Much
better for pulling than the oil sucking 350 that was in it.

There was a picture in an old Hot Rod magazine of a ‘65
Corvette Stingray with a Cobra snake on the hood. And that
was under the hood. Chevy freaks went bonzo over it!

Some prefer Ford class over Chevy trash!!!

  78. Ethan Says:

I am a Ford guy and the only good part about that car is the motor because chevy`s suck. Next time dont waste your money on a Comaro Body, Put that motor in a 1970 boss 427 Mustang

  79. Carol Says:

My husband and I love the idea. We’ve had a couple Camaros and a few Mustangs. The Mustangs last longer than the Camaros. I was stranded a couple of times in the Camaro which upset me because of the location.

The 68′ Camaro style is nice but doesn’t compare to a 69′ Mustang Mach 1 or a 70′ Boss 302.

I ‘m building new Mercedez from 1951 170 D & a 1990 300E. I have to move back the engine about 3feet back how much this weight off set will effect the drive.
if I need to add weight to compensate how many pound?
Is there any formula, I could follow for this weight distribution, what is the relation between the wheel base length and ratio of the weight between front & rare of the car.
    appreciate any comments

Being a diehard Ford fanatic, I couldnt help but smile when I saw the blue ovals on the valve covers but still, I always liked the looks of these era camaro’s. If the owner had put a Mopar hemi or a blown SBC in this car, It would still be a very nice car anyone would be proud to own and really, really proud to be able to say “I built this.”
